The English Court of Quarter Sessions records - what's in them and where to find them
Tubby, Rose and Wild Cat - tough guys one and all. These are the nicknames of Thomas Richards, Henry Sampson and John Hoskin, a little gang of miscreants hauled before the Court of Quarter Sessions at Lostwithiel in Cornwall in July 1796. It’s great to find your ancestors’ baptism and marriage details in the parish registers, but finding such descriptive nicknames listed in the Court records is family history gold. And these records are more and more accessible. A little searching has uncovered the Court records of an accidental death, the threatening language and a ‘reputed fatherhood’ of some of my ancestors.
